New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez left in the fourth quarter with a right shoulder injury and did not return as the Jets defeated the New York Giants 24-21 in overtime.
Sanchez took a big hit from Giants defensive end Marvin Austin and was in obvious pain and had his right (throwing) shoulder iced after the injury before heading to the locker room.
The Jets won on a Billy Cundiff 32-yard field goal.
Sanchez, who has been in a battle with rookie Geno Smith for the starting job, did not even enter the game until midway through the fourth quarter.
Smith had thrown three interceptions and ran out of the end zone for a safety.
Jets coach Rex Ryan tried to explain why he put Sanchez on the field when he already had locked up the starting job.
“We're just trying to win the game,” Ryan said, adding that injuries are part of the game.
Sanchez completed five-of-six passes for 72 yards before the injury.
Smith completed 16-of-30 passes for 199 yards with a touchdown.
Ryan Spadola caught three passes for 110 yards for the Jets.
David Wilson ran for 92 yards, including an 84-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
Colts 27, Browns 6 Andrew Luck threw two touchdown passes as the Colts' starting offense continued to roll, defeating the Browns 27-6. Luck completed 16-of-25 passes for 164 yards for the Colts, who led 10-0 at halftime and 20-3 at the end of the third quarter.
Colts receiver T.Y. Hilton caught a touchdown pass for the third straight week.
Reggie Wayne caught seven passes for 79 yards and Griff Whalen pulled in four passes for 57 yards.
Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden completed 12-of-25 passes for 105 yards. Backup Jason Campbell connected on eight-of-14 passes for 112 yards.
The Colts, who allowed 44 points in their pre-season opener against Buffalo, allowed just 13 first downs and just a pair of field goals by the Browns.
Eagles 31, Jaguars 24 Michael Vick was strong again as Philadelphia's starter in a 31-24 win over Jacksonville.
Vick completed 15-of-23 passes for 184 yards and ran seven times for 53 yards.
Vick's backup, Nick Foles, completed 10-of-11 passes for 112 yards.
Bryce Brown ran 11 times for 92 yards and a touchdown for the Eagles.
Chris Polk scored the winning touchdown on a four-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Chad Henne passed for 106 yards and two touchdowns and Jordan Todman ran for 105 yards and a score for the Jaguars.
Buccaneers 17, Dolphins 16 Mike Glennon's 12-yard touchdown pass to David Douglas with just over a minute remaining was the difference for Tampa Bay as they prevailed 17-16 over Miami.
The Dolphins out-gained the Buccaneers 312 yards to 160 but could not manufacture a win.
Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Freeman completed just six-of-16 passes for 59 yards.
