Giants and Jets both get 2010 home openers in new stadium

NEW YORK -- The New York Giants and New York Jets will each get to play a home game in the new stadium they will share on the opening week of the 2010 National Football League season, the NFL announced on Monday.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the Giants will play at the new US$1.7 billion Meadowlands Stadium on Sept. 12 in a Sunday afternoon game and the Jets will play a Monday night home game on Sept. 13.

No opponents or other schedule details were revealed.

“After extensive discussions with both teams, we have come up with what we believe is a unique approach for celebrating the opening of the new Meadowlands Stadium,” Goodell said.

Both teams have played in Giants Stadium at the Meadowlands since 1984, but have only played at home together on the same weekend once, in 1991 when the Jets played on Sunday and the Giants on Monday night.

The NFL clubs split the construction costs on the new facility.

A coin flip was made by Goodell to decide which club would play host to the first NFL regular-season game in the facility and the Giants won.

The Jets will host the first NFL game in the facility with a pre-season exhibition in August.
