China triathlete banned after positive doping test

BEIJING -- China’s top female triathlete Wang Hongni has been banned for two years for doping, which will keep her out of next year’s Beijing Olympics. The state-run China Daily reported the suspension on Thursday after it was confirmed by the sport’s governing body, the International Triathlon Union. The ITU said the 24-year-old tested positive for metabolites of testosterone during an out-of-competition test on Aug. 24. She did not contest the findings and her suspension began on Saturday. It expires on Oct. 5, 2009.

“This is an individual case,” Chinese Triathlon Association director Wang Jianguo said. “Her suspension won’t hamper our preparation for the Beijing Olympics.”
