‘Independent Solidarity Union’ launched
Chang named a former lawmaker, Chen Chieh-ju, her secretary-general. She also formed a central committee of 11, including herself and 10 independent lawmakers. The ISU will nominate 15 candidates for the parliamentary elections scheduled for the end of this year, Chang said. “We believe all of them will get elected,” she added. Though she has yet to announce her candidacy, Chang will run for the Legislative Yuan. With her strong power base in Chiayi, she will have no problem getting elected. Among the well-wishers at the ISU inaugural meeting were Wang Jin-pyng, president of the Legislative Yuan, and Chang Chung-hsiung, secretary-general of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party. Also present was Lee Chin-yung, vice minister of the interior. All political parties have to register with the ministry, according to Taiwan’s law. |
