Effective exercises do not have to be sweaty: clinic
TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The rumors that a person could lose weight if he or she sweats during exercise is incorrect, according to doctors from MJ Life, a private medical clinic.
Doctors there also say that it is not true that eating within an hour after exercising would result in weight gain.
According to a survey by MJ Life, 53 percent of the 1,010 respondents believe that they have to sweat a lot during exercises to lose weight, 42.5 percent said that they would gain weight if they eat within one hour after exercising and 37 percent think that muscle soreness after exercising indicates they have muscle injuries.
Those are misconceptions, said doctors at MJ life. People think they have lost weight after sweating a lot because water leaves the body through sweat. When they drink water after the exercise, however, the weight would go up again.
Some physical instructors have also advised people not to eat within one hour of exercising, but the doctors at MJ Life said that in the half hour after working out people can eat some high carbohydrate food like rice or bread without gaining weight.
Also, the belief that cycling and jogging would make the legs thick is not true, according to MJ Life. Cyclists and joggers can stretch their muscles after exercise to keep their legs slim.
MJ Life advises people to exercise three times a day for 20 to 30 minutes at a time to keep healthy.
