TAIPEI, Taiwan -- President Ma Ying-jeou will hold a debate with the leader of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on issues regarding a proposed cross-Taiwan Strait trade pact before the end of April, the Presidential Office announced Thursday.

The announcement came after Presidential Office Secretary-General Liao Liou-yi met with DPP Secretary-General Su Jia-chyuan to discuss the format and other technical details of a much-anticipated debate on the pros and cons of Taiwan signing a wide-reaching economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA) with China.

Presidential Office spokesman Lo Chih-chiang said at a news conference that both sides have agreed that Public Television Service organizes the debate by the end of April.

DPP spokesman Tsai Chi-chang was also at the news conference.
