TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A positively venerable foreign couple got married Saturday in the southern Taiwan city of Tainan in a traditional Chinese ceremony.

Britton Chance, a 96-year-old U.S. visiting professor at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) in Tainan City, and his 62-year-old Japanese bride, Shoko Nioka, tied the knot at the Eternal Golden Castle — one of the most famous historic remnants in the southern city.

The wedding ceremony, witnessed and blessed by Tainan Mayor Hsu Tain-tsair, took place according to traditional rituals with music provided by a Chinese folk music orchestra and a parade of wedding assistants in ancient garb bearing the bride in a sedan chair.

“Tainan City is home to me and Britton, and that is the reason we chose to get married here amid its cultural ambiance,” said Nioka, a Kyoto native.

Chance and Nioka decided to tie the knot after knowing each other for 26 years.

Chance, who was selected as a member of the United States National Academy of Sciences in 1952, is currently teaching at the NCKU.
