The Biegu Wetland, located in Tungshih Farm, belongs to Taiwan Sugar Corp. and was home to numerous kinds of large birds, including black-winged Kites, buzzards and Eurasian Buzzards five years ago, before the forestation. Now the numbers of black-winged Kites has been reduced from a dozen to four and the Eurasian Buzzards from 15 to four, said an official from Chiayi County's Wild Bird Society.

Despite conservationists' concerns, the forestation in the long run is ecological, said Sun Yuan-xun, a professor in the Wildlife Conservation Department of the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, adding that more species could reside in the forest than in wetlands; unfortunately, those large birds will then have to find other habitats.
