Two children killed in apartment building fire TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A fire broke out in a building in Taipei County's Yingge Township and killed two young girls on Nov. 5. When the fire erupted, the 30-year-old father, surnamed Wen, was working in a factory in Taoyuan County. The mother claimed she only left the house for some 10 minutes to send a resume for a job, said the police officers. Yet neighbors revealed that the 25-year-old mother frequently stayed at the cyber cafe, said a local media outlet. The pair was found alone in the house. Police officials are looking into the parents' responsibilities in leaving the 3- and 4-year-old kids alone at home. Wen previously found his daughters playing with fire out of curiosity and he scolded them, he told the police. The local fire department presumed the blaze might have been caused by a short-circuit or that the two kids may have been playing with fire when their parents were away. The family moved into the corrugated iron house on a 5-story building last month because of its lower rent, noted the officers. According to the fire department, the iron sheets and the plank partitions might have led to the violent blaze. Police officials gave a reminder that leaving children alone at home was against the law. |
