TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Ministry of Education (MOE) yesterday asked schools to delay recommencement after winter break until Feb. 20 in 2010 due to inconveniences caused by the lunar calendar for the Chinese New Year.

Currently, the official MOE calendar marks winter break from Jan. 11 to Feb. 10, and the Chinese New Year holidays from Feb. 13 to 19, with two days in between the two breaks.

But the MOE urged local education officials to consider connecting the two breaks for middle and elementary school by making up the two in-between school days on Saturdays later in the semester.

With the exception of three local governments, all school districts in Taiwan have accepted the suggestion. MOE is still negotiating with the reluctant authorities.
