Man detained for bribery HUALIEN, Taiwan -- A court in Hualien approved the detention of a local township chief candidate yesterday for bribery at the election, according to the United Evening News. Chen Wen-guang was allegedly buying votes by paying NT$1,000 to each voter that supported him. The district prosecutor's office was tipped off earlier and brought Chen and other related persons to the office for questioning Wednesday including three alleged recipients of the bribes and two accomplices of Chen. The voters confessed to receiving money from one of Chen's accomplices, surnamed Tian, who asked them to vote for Chen, said the report. However, Chen denied the accusation. Later, Tian admitted that he was invited to a feast in Chen's house and was tasked with sending more than NT$20,000 to voters. Tian said that the name list detailing which voters accepted money was still in his hand. The prosecutors' office summoned 20 township voters to consolidate the evidence and demanded Chen's detention from the court, which was approved. Chen is the first case of vote-rigging with clear evidence in the coming three-in-one election. |
