Tabloid to pay Tien NT$500,000 for libel TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwanese celebrity Lily Tien yesterday won NT$500,000 in a successful civil suit against popular tabloid Scoop Weekly Taiwan for their defaming 2006 exclusive on Tien, which claimed that she had only a middle school education and that all her teeth were artificial. On top of the money compensated, the Taipei District Court also sentenced He Chih-hsiang, the reporter behind the false story, to a 25-day detention that can be substituted with a monetary penalty. The NT$500,000 was to be paid by He and the page editor, Ching Chu-chen. According to the court, the story featured in the 948 issue of Scoop Weekly was penned by He under a different name and falsely claimed that Tien had “a middle school education at most” and that her “entire set of teeth were fake.” Tien sued the tabloid for defamation and initially sought NT$2 million in compensation. |
