TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Executive Yuan will try to complete the widening of National Freeway No. 2 by July of 2011 to ease traffic congestion to and from Taoyuan International Airport, said the Executive Yuan's president yesterday.

To solve increasing traffic congestion and possible further escalation of the problem with the planned Taoyuan Aero City, the Executive Yuan has started a project to widen National Freeway No. 2 from a four-lane highway to six to eight lanes depending on sections.

Dividing the 20.4 kilometer freeway with National Freeway No. 1, the nine kilometers extending westward to the airport will be expanded to eight lanes, and six lanes for the section eastward to National Freeway No. 3. In addition, an extension to Dayuan will be added. The entire project will cost about NT$16.482 billion. On average, 3,717 vehicles travel on the freeway toward the airport per hour. After widening, the road will be able to accommodate 5,034 vehicles every hour. There will not be any congestion on the widened freeway when there aren't any accidents, according to Li Tai-ming, the National Freeway Bureau director.
