Chiu was originally sentenced in Taipei District Court to three years in jail, but appealed that decision.

According to the verdict, the woman, surnamed Chiu, lied to the victim, surnamed Wang, by saying that Wang's house was haunted by numerous ghosts. Chiu then claimed that she was capable of exorcising the demons as long as Wang paid Chiu.

At first, Chiu asked Wang to transfer NT$300,000 to the bank account of Wang's daughter. However, Chiu continued to ask Wang for more money by claiming that the god was unhappy with the amount.

After transmitting a total of NT$3.3 million to Chiu, Wang could not afford to pay more and asked Chiu to return her money. Chiu refused.

Wang then realized that the exorcism was, in fact, a scam and reported the case to Taipei police.
