Police say nearly two dozen others were injured in Sunday's accident.

The accident occurred in Gonda district, 95 miles (150 kilometers) southeast of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state.

India has one of the largest railroad networks in the world and carries more than 14 million passengers each day. Accidents are common, and most are blamed on poor maintenance and human error.
