Kuang may represent KMT in by-election TAITUNG, Taiwan -- Controversial county magistrate yesterday registered to run in the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) primary for by-election of a legislative seat representing Taitung County, rousing opposing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) threatening to take legal action against KMT. After her high profile withdrawal from the Taitung County magistrate race, incumbent Taitung County Magistrate Kuang Li-jen registered to run in KMT's primary for the Legislative Yuan vacancy left by KMT Legislator Huang Jian-ting. Since Huang had resigned from his post to run for Kuang's current position, DPP questioned if KMT arranged a swap between Kuang and Huang. DPP lawmaker Gao Jyh-peng urged Justice Minister Wang Ching-feng to check into possible KMT violation of laws governing the election of public officials. In response to DPP accusations, KMT whip Lu Hsueh-chang admitted that it is awkward to have Kuang as the only registered candidate at the moment, but it does not mean KMT was behind any type of back-room deals. Taitung County district prosecutors have launched an investigation into possible law violations, said Feng Cheng, lead prosecutor for Taitung County. |
