CHIAYI, Taiwan -- An earthquake of 4.6 magnitudes on Richer Scale hit Chiayi yesterday at 11:36a.m., causing the High Speed Rail(HSR) to suspend its service for one and a half hours, United Daily Evening News reported. Several trains were cancelled during the ensuing schedule snarl-up.

HSR resumed its operation at around 1:00p.m. after its suspension sparked an outcry among passengers. Dozens of passengers demanded to be let off at Taichung (Wurih Station) from the southbound train which set out from Taipei at 11:06.

HSR was required to halt train operations for safety checks and inspections as the magnitude of the earthquake exceeded their minimum safety level, according to sources from HSR.
