Township, village chiefs sentenced to half year in jail CHIAYI, Taiwan -- Two local chiefs in the county of Chiayi were convicted of rigging an election for the treasurer of a farmers' association and sentenced each to half a year in prison yesterday. A Chiayi district court judge ruled that Lee Wen-tang, chief of Chungpu Township, and Liu Teh-cheng, chief of Shenkeng Village, were guilty of bribing a member of the board of the local farmers' association to get their client elected treasurer. Shenkeng is a village under the jurisdiction of Chungpu. The two chiefs gave the board member NT$100,000 to get a certain Hsu elected treasurer of the Farmers' Association of Chungpu, a written verdict said. The board member accepted the money but later returned it, the judge pointed out. “Nonetheless,” the judge said, “Lee and Liu were guilty of rigging the election.” The sentence is commuted to a fine, assessed on the basis of NT$1,000 a day. |
