Strong earthquake hits Venezuelan coast

WASHINGTON -- An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Moment Magnitude scale struck the coast of Venezuela on Saturday, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake occurred 96 kilometers (59 miles) from the capital Caracas.

The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was a “small possibility of a local tsunami that could affect coasts located usually no more than 100 kilometers from the earthquake epicenter.”

The tremor took place at 2006 GMT according to the USGS, or around 03:36 pm local time.
