TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Chunghwa Telecom will officially kick off its new FTTx network services to residents on the Alishan (Mt.Ali) in the southern county of Chiayi on July 8, as it has completed installation of optical fiber cables on the slopes along the forestry railroad, according to executives of the Chiayi branch of the island's largest telecom service provider.

Residents or tourists living in hotels on the Alishan used to suffer poor-quality images on the TV screens, but those problems will be completely addressed after the FTTx network becomes operational on the Alishan, the Chiayi branch officials said.

The officials continued that starting July 8, travelers can enjoy HDTV (high-definition TV) programs and movies, as well as Internet services, as both the FTTx Internet service and mutual on demand multimedia (MOD) bandwidth services will become available then. Chunghwa Telecom started to design the FTTx network in September 2008, and then moved to install relevant optical fiber cables spanning 32.6 kilometers. The entire project was completed by the end of June at a total cost of around NT$10 million.
