HUALIEN, Taiwan -- Travel industry insiders have recommended that Taroko National Park provide military helmets to visitors to protect them from falling stones. Falling stones have been a frequent occurrence along the park's tunnel of nine turns trail, and the park has been providing visitors with safety hats free of charge.

Cheng Ming-kang, a member of the tourism industry however, thinks that military helmets, made of steel, would increase the safety afforded to visitors, as well as being an additional selling point.

In light of the military's plans to dramatically downsize over the next few years, there should be plenty of helmets to spare, he said. The safety hats have proved extremely popular at the park, as the park often runs out of hats to hand out. With the help of sponsors, the park has managed to increase its supply of hats.
