CHANGHUA, Taiwan -- A Changhua garage owner was told yesterday to pay NT$705,000 (US$21,400) in damages to his elder brother, whose son was burned alive along with the garage owner's three children at his home office.

A Chang district court judge ruled Lai Yi-kai guilty of negligence that led to the death of the four children in a fire at the garage September 30, 2007.

Lai Yi-ching, the elder brother of the garage owner, had entrusted his son to his brother.

He sued Yi-kai for damages, demanding NT$5.14 million.

The judge held the garage owner responsible for the poor wiring that caused a short circuit starting the fire. But the amount was reduced by NT$4,4435,000.

The elder brother is contemplating an appeal.
