Yilan County Magistrate Lu Guo-hwa said booths exhibiting and selling these aboriginal gifts will be incorporated into major tourism promotion activities in the future by the county government.

The campaign is aimed at attracting tourists from outside the county and generating local business opportunities, Lu added.

Most of Yilan County's indigenous people, mainly the Atayal tribe, live in Datong and Nanao townships and are skilled at hunting and weaving and manage to eke out a living by growing vegetables. To boost local economy, the county's Department of Indigenous Affairs, in conjunction with Yilan University, has recreated various traditional gifts by repackaging existing products and providing guidance on the creation of new items. These gifts, which symbolize Atayal culture, emphasize environmental consciousness and respect concepts of traditional indigenous lifestyles. The gifts include racks,mobile phone bags, coasters and backpacks.
