Accidents that involve bicycle riders reported from January to May in Yilan County rose from 8.8 percent last year to 20 percent, the police department added.

According to police reports, the majority of bicycle accidents occur at intersections, indicating that cyclers often violate traffic regulations by illegally crossing the street and doing one turn instead of the required double turn, which often results in collisions with the incoming traffic.

As more people turn to bicycles as a mode of transportation in response to the government's "save energy and reduce carbon emission" campaign, the death rate of bike traffic accidents has soared in proportion, according to the police.

The police urge cyclers to abide by traffic regulations. They also encourage cyclists to equip their bikes with devices such as headlights, taillights and rear reflectors to ensure their safety while driving at night.
