Get the scourge of bicycles off my sidewalks TAIPEI, Taiwan -- I am writing in response to the story from the Tuesday, May 19, issue titled "Councilor highlights Taipei cycling 'black spots' ". The story mentions the worst areas, or 'black spots,' bike accidents happen most and quotes from Taipei councilor Wu-Shih-cheng. Councilor Wu, I believe the only 'black spots' in this city are the sidewalks. I can't believe anyone bicycles on the road as they are always all over the sidewalks running into us regular, law-abiding people who are walking right where we should be. We shouldn't have to be worried about these inconsiderate people as they weave in and out of us in a place they have no right to be. This city would be better off if the police put a little effort into getting them off the sidewalks, something I have never witnessed. But then again, look where we are as nobody follows the rule of law here, so I do not expect anything to be done. But when someone (or their child) gets hurt that is well-connected or famous, then they will crack down I think. Again, we have to remember where we live. So, to councilor Wu, your city will be a much better and safer place to live once your self-titled 'black spot' is erased. It would just take your police department to do a little work, but I do not expect that to happen either, I have been here too long to know! |
