DPP set for rally
Many supporters of the Democratic Progressive Party are already calling for the launch of a recall campaign against Ma over what they call the government's pro-China policies and increasing restrictions on freedoms. The DPP chairwoman said her party does not rule out launching a recall campaign, but is not in a hurry to do it tomorrow. She said the DPP instead will seek to consolidate other social movements and opposition forces, gathering momentum through future actions the opposition will undertake. The DPP has vowed to overstay their permit for the Sunday demonstration for an overnight sit-down protest till Monday on Ketegalan Boulevard in front of the presidential building. Tsai, saying she is ready to go to jail for her actions, said all leading DPP members will stay behind if demonstrators choose to further prolong the protest. Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin reiterated that the city government will not come down hard on the demonstration as long as the demonstrators stay calm and peaceful. But Hau questioned why the DPP is refusing to apply for the rights to use Ketegalan Boulevard on May 18. The mayor said the DPP will be held fully responsible if the demonstration causes any impact on traffic in the area. The DPP has obtained the rights to use Ketegalan Boulevard on Sunday, and adjacent Zhongshan South Road on Monday. But Tsai has described the idea of applying for road rights as an "old way of thinking." The demonstration is meant to display the opposition's protest against a government plan to revise the public assembly law. The DPP claims the proposed revision is an attempt by the Ma administration to deny the people rights to demonstrate in public. A spokesman for the ruling Kuomintang, Lee Chien-jung, dismissed the opposition camp's talks of a recall campaign against Ma. Lee said such a campaign would be totally against mainstream opinion, judging from the DPP's current low popularity ratings and its history of corruption. The city government said it has worked out traffic measures to make sure students of the three schools in the area can be safe traveling to and away from school on Monday. |
