Chiu Yi's actions are completely different from Joe McCarthy TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Mr. Joe Hung is a well learned and respected columnist; however I cannot agree with his March 2nd article "Chiu Yi more like Joe McCarthy." One need just ask this question: What good has McCarthy done for USA and what harm has Chiu done to Taiwan? McCarthy promoted so called "patriotism," persecuted and harmed those who had different ideology from his. McCarthyism, unfortunately, encouraged a certain portion of Americans with his self-righteous and holier-than-thou mentality. Lawmaker Chiu has, for the last three years, at times even ridiculed as quixotic, been trying to uncover the abuse of power by the DPP government in general and the Chen family's rampant corruption in particular from 2000 to 2008. Chiu's act is not revenge based on hate but an effort to restore social justice and moral values. In fact, Chen Shui-bian is more like Joe McCarthy, both are snake oil salesman -- McCarthy with his Patriotism for USA and Chen with his Taiwan Independence. |
