Exec mired in Chen family scam attempts suicide TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Tu Li-ping, a board director of Yuanta Securities involved in former first family's scams, was rescued in time after she attempted a suicide. The finance executive was found by her family in her car parked near a factory in Wugu district of Taipei County late Saturday night when she tried to end her life with carbon monoxide from the exhaust of the vehicle. She was rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment and was discharged yesterday morning. Tu was released on a bail of NT$2 million last week after coming under probe for allegedly delivering former first lady Wu Shu-chen with NT$200 million in cash at her presidential residence to seek support for the Yuanta Financial Group's acquisition of Fu-Hwa Financial Holding. Wu denied the allegation, saying she accepted only NT$20 million from Tu as political contribution, according to her lawyer. Former President Chen Shui-bian, who has been detained for investigation into cases of alleged corruption, has persistently denied that he and his family had embezzled public fund or taken bribes. But he refused to reveal details concerning certain cases, saying "there would be lives at stake" if he divulges relevant information. |
