TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Gordon Chen, chairman of the Financial Supervisory Commission, was blasted for “doing nothing but presiding over meetings” by a veteran Kuomintang lawmaker yesterday.

Lai Shyh-bao took Chen to task at a Legislative Yuan committee meeting for the “poor performance” of the FSC.

“We’ve heard,” Lai told Chen, “that you are calling meetings almost every day, sometimes until midnight.”

Meetings couldn’t stop the tumbling share prices on the Taipei stock market, Lai charged. In fact, he argued, Taipei suffered worst in the current worldwide financial crisis.

“You are doing nothing but preside over meetings, where no decisions are taken,” Lai protested. The only decisions Chen took, he added, was to call more meetings.

Chen denied he called meetings every day, though he admitted there was one night when the meeting continued after 1 a.m.
