S. Korea: Melamine found in Chinese egg products SEOUL, South Korea -- South Korea said Wednesday the industrial chemical melamine was found in five egg products imported from China. Melamine levels in an egg powder and four other products ranged from 0.1 to 4 parts per million, the Agriculture Ministry said. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says tiny traces of melamine -- less than 2.5 parts per million -- are not harmful in most foods, except baby formula. Only one of the five egg products had traces higher than that level. The ministry said it banned the import of the products, and would collect and destroy the products already in the country. Melamine can cause kidney stones and lead to kidney failure. It has been blamed for infant deaths in China. |
