KOLKATA -- India's Tata Group announced Friday it was abandoning a plant in the east of the country slated to turn out the world's cheapest car after weeks of violent demonstrations triggered by a land dispute. The row over the Nano plant in Singur, on the outskirts of West Bengal state capital Kolkata, had emerged as a symbol of the clashing interests of India's farmers and industry.

The announcement came after construction of the high-profile factory in Marxist-ruled West Bengal was halted late August when the protests made work impossible.
