Agricultural losses from Sinlaku rise to NT$850 mil. TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The country's agricultural losses due to the protracted onslaught of Typhoon Sinlaku had soared to NT$854.90 million (US$26.55 million) as of Thursday, according to statistics released that day by the Cabinet-level Council of Agriculture (COA). Yilan County in northeastern Taiwan was the hardest-hit among all the counties, with losses estimated at NT$185 million, followed by the central county of Nantou, with losses amounting to NT$181 million and the northern county of Miaoli, with losses climbing to NT$106 million. Damage to a wide variety of crops accounted for NT$533.05 million of the overall agricultural losses as of Thursday, with bananas the hardest-hit, followed by grapes, guavas, bellfruit, persimmons, rice, green onions, Chinese chives, papayas, tangerines and custard apples. The typhoon, which deluged the island with torrential rain during its four-day onslaught, also caused losses of NT$17.79 million to livestock and poultry farmers, NT$85.57 million in the fishery sector and NT$2.52 million in the forestry sector. |
