Vietnam Culture Festival to be held TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Department of Labor under the Taipei City Government will hold a Vietnam Culture Festival Sunday in Taipei, with the aim of inviting Vietnamese workers, spouses and local residents to celebrate Vietnam's Independence Day. In an expression of gratitude to these workers for their contribution to the city and in celebration of Vietnam's Independence Day on Sept. 2, the Taipei City Government will host the event from 11:30 Sunday at the 228 Memorial Park, the Department of Labor stated in a press release. A series of activities, such as a competition to wrap spring rolls and dance and singing performances, will be staged to pay tribute to Vietnamese expatriates and to help Taiwanese people learn more about neighboring cultures, the department said. The event was organized under an annual program to highlight Southeast Asian cultures. The Thailand Culture Festival was held in April on the occasion of the "Songkran," and the Filipino Culture Festival was held in June to celebrate the Philippines Independence Day. According to the Department of Labor, more than 5,000 Vietnamese work in Taipei, mostly as caregivers, among a total of 37, 000 foreign workers in the city. Statistics from the Ministry of the Interior show that a total of 125,000 Vietnamese, including 69,000 workers, were living in Taiwan as of the end of 2007. |
