TAICHUNG, Taiwan -- Taichung City will sponsor a fair Aug. 24 to help laborers better understand their legal rights and interests and help employers not to violate relevant laws, Deputy Mayor Hsiao Chia-chi said yesterday.

The fair will be aimed at helping laborers gain knowledge of their work rights and interests by offering legal counselling, employment information and health checks, as well as massages, free coffee, games and lucky draws to attract visitors, Hsiao said.

According to Hsiao, many of the city's working class population lack sufficient knowledge of their own rights, which is why the city government is sponsoring the activity. The fair will also help employers become familiar with relevant regulations and laws regarding their workers' interests, he noted.

There are 489,000 working wave earners in Taichung City, accounting for nearly half of the city's total population. Last year, the city's labor affairs bureau dealt with 1,629 labor dispute complaints, most of which concerned salary and severance fee payments, as a result of divergent interpretations of laws on the part of labor and management, Hsiao pointed out.
