TAIPEI, Taiwan -- About 11,000 positions in Taiwan's optoelectronics industry are waiting to be filled, said 104 Job Bank Corp. yesterday. The number represents a 10 percent growth from this time last year, 104 said.

"This indicates demand for human resources in the optoelectronics industry is growing more steadily than in other industries in the high-tech sector, such as semiconductor and telecom," 104 said. However, 104 found the industry's human resources supply-to-demand ratio to be 0.4, meaning roughly two people are competing for each position. "Interested applicants should take advantage of every opportunity to get into the optoelectronics field," 104 said.

Taiwan has developed a robust, highly competitive optoelectronics industry over the decades, in which a wide variety of flat panel displays are manufactured for various IT and consumer electronics products such as LCD TVs, LCD monitors and notebook PC screens.

In fact, Taiwan is home to the world's third largest TFT-LCD maker, AU Optronics.

In a related story, Chi Mei Optoelectronics, Taiwan's No. 2 TFT-LCD maker after AU, will hold a job fair at Hsinchu Science Industrial Park today, looking for R&D, manufacturing and equipment engineers.

In particular, Chi Mei is looking for those with a post-baccalaureate degree from engineering-related majors, 104 said.

According to 104, Chi Mei will also hold job fairs in Tainan -- where the company is based -- on July 19 and in Kaohsiung on Aug. 2.
