HANOI -- Vietnamese investigators found the cause of a bridge collapse that killed 54 people last year was a temporary pillar placed on an uneven foundation, the communist government said on its website Thursday. Eighty more workers were injured when a section of the Japanese financed Can Tho bridge, one of Vietnam's largest infrastructure projects, collapsed on September 26 in the country's worst peacetime construction disaster.

A temporary support pillar for the concrete structure was placed on a surface with uneven soil density, causing it to buckle and triggering the collapse of a section of a ramp to the bridge, the probe found.
