VMAX is building a high-speed wireless data network

Wednesday, June 4, 2008

VMAX Telecom, awarded a WiMAX operator license by the National Communications Commission (NCC) of Taiwan in August, 2007, with the lowest special permit percentage of 5.2 percent (as a percent of total revenue), is building a high-speed data network using the IEEE802.16e WiMAX technology with connection speed many times higher than those currently available in 3G.

VMAX said it would spend up to NT$3~4 billion over next two years on the network (1200~1500 BTS), which will be available in northern Taiwan. This network will be the first to deliver DSL-like, VoIP services and then other new mobile services like LBS, VOD, Gaming, etc., after it goes into service in Taipei City by the end of 2008.

"This will be broadband on the go, or simply personal broadband," said Teddy Huang, VMAX CEO, at WiMAX Forum Operator Summit. VMAX's WiMAX network will allow users to gain access to the Internet while they are on the move. And it can also be considered as a viable alternative to existing ADSL.

During the WiMAX Forum Operator Summit, VMAX is teamed up with ITRI (Industrial Technologies Research Institute), a non-profit research institute that engages in research and development of the highest level of industrial technology in Taiwan, to expand its experimental mobile WiMAX network with additional 4 BTS for its Mobile-Taiwan WiMAX Applications Lab (MTWAL) project. It can provide seamless coverage for a high-tech corridor between ITRI and Science Park in Hsinchu. Participants to the Summit will be invited to visit the MTWAL so that they can witness and experience various mobile WiMAX applications on the go. The joint MTWAL's experimental network will be expanded gradually to cover the entire Hsinchu Science Park, National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) and National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in the coming months. And it will eventually become part of VMAX's mobile WiMAX commercial network in Hsinchu area when VMAX launches its service in Hsinchu area in early 2009. The MTWAL can also become the Test Bed as well as the WiMAX Applications Lab for mobile WiMAX service development and testing for VMAX in the future.

VMAX Telecom is aiming to be the leading WiMAX service provider in Taiwan by offering customers at anytime, anywhere or with any device High Speed Internet Access, Video On Demand, LBS, VoIP, as well as a variety of new and innovative value added services/applications. VMAX Telecom commits to the continuing deployment of innovative products and services for providing people in Taiwan with better and new personal wireless broadband experience.

VMAX Telecom is composed of an influential lineup of shareholders, containing Teco Electric & Machinery (having mass consumer distribution), Tecom (a renowned wireless and broadband CPE vendor) and Vibo Telecom (the only pure 3G WCDMA operator in Taiwan) to form a technically strong and financially solid team. And most importantly, its bid of 5.2 percent in special permit percentage represents an insurmountable advantage for VMAX to become a leading service provider in Taiwan.
