SAO PAULO, Brazil -- Inter Milan striker Adriano scored a goal and dismantled the Fluminense defense to lead Sao Paulo to a 1-0 victory over Fluminense on Wednesday in their opening quarterfinal match of the Copa Libertadores.

Sao Paulo needs only to draw the second-leg match in Rio de Janeiro next week to advance to the semifinals against Argentina's Boca Juniors or Mexico's Atlas, who played out a 2-2 draw in their first-leg quarterfinal.

Adriano, on loan to Sao Paulo until June, made the difference in a hard-fought game. Attacking on both wings, he was the reference point for an offense that dominated Fluminense's patchwork defense, which was without injured starter Thiago Silva.

Adriano made his presence felt after just four minutes, taking a pass from striker Dagoberto and firing a booming right-footer from the top of the goal area that Fluminense goalkeeper Fernando Henrique deflected wide with his leg for a corner kick.

In the 20th minute, Dagoberto charged up the left side and fired across the goal mouth. Fernando Henrique tapped it straight up field and Adriano fired in a right-footer uncovered for his fifth goal of the Copa Libertadores.

At Buenos Aires, Jorge Torres scored an 88th-minute equalizer to give Atlas the draw with Boca Juniors.

Torres' header stunned a crowd of 42,000 at Velez Sarsfield's stadium in Buenos Aires, employed by Boca after it was barred from using La Bombonera because of debris thrown onto the field that struck a linesman in an second-round match April 30 against Cruzeiro.

The two sides face off again next Wednesday in Guadalajara, Mexico, with Atlas taking home two precious away goals.

Atlas led on a header by Omar Flores in the sixth minute.

Boca equalized in the 36th with an own-goal by Hugo Ayala. Boca forward Rodrigo Palacio drove a cross from the right side into Martin Palermo, who redirected it the ball toward the goal, off Ayala's back and into the net.

The Argentines showed more determination in the second half, with Julio Cesar Caceres putting Boca ahead 2-1 in the 70th minute.

Torres' goal capitalized on an error by Boca goalkeeper Mauricio Caranta, who found himself out of position on a corner kick.
