Google seeks friends as it cuts birthday cake
Alan Eustace, Senior Vice President of Engineering, commented Taiwan would be a "great place for research and development for Google," as it is renowned for manufacturing "some of the best hardware in the world." He went on to comment that "since electronic devices rely on software," he saw lucrative potential in partnerships with Taiwan hardware companies, which would also lead to "better devices." Eustace said Google, which is open source, is using its ability to run on any platform to "open up possibilities for deals with hardware firms," pointing to its current partnership with Taiwan handset company HTC, as the two prepare to launch a new "Dream" handset using Google software. However, Eustace dismissed any detailed comment on questions about the newest of its joint-projects; "Android." Android, the mobile device platform, is a project by the Open Handset Alliance, a group of over 30 technology and mobile companies. When asked about the success of the Taiwan branch so far, Li Kai-fu, founding president of Google China, said that "Google's success has been completely beyond what we had imagined," which he said has since "become the biggest brandname in the world." Though known by the public for its Web search engine, that part of the company was remarked by Li as "taking up a very small part of Google's business," at about seven percent. The celebration also drew attention to the company's innovation in its "lounge-like" office, located in Taipei 101. Google's "lounge" office, colorfully designed with a broad selection of toys and modern art pieces, appears similar to a kindergarten. The typical cubicles of an office are transformed into special themed partitions, each dedicated to a specific toy or cute-and-cuddle character such as the Nintendo creation "Mario Brothers" and Disney's "Winnie the Pooh." Andy Cheng, an employee at the Taipei lounge office, highly praised the "welcoming" work environment offered by his employers, noting that the atmosphere allows employees to work efficiently and comfortably by neutralizing potentially stressful or frustrating office tasks. "If things stress you out too much time you can just go play pingpong or foozeball, then get back onto your work," he smiled. "For me its become so comfortable that I prefer it to my own home," he concluded. Google is an American public corporation which earns its revenue from online and mobile advertising related to its Internet search, web-based e-mail, online mapping, office productivity, social networking, and video sharing as well as selling advertising-free versions of the same technologies. Google was co-founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin while students at Stanford University and officially incorporated in 1998. |
