Joe Calzaghe wants to finish against Jones
The undefeated world super-middleweight champion, who moved up to light-heavy to capture a split decision over Hopkins in Las Vegas on Saturday, wants just one more fight before retirement. "I'm going to fight one more time and it's going to have to be a big fight -- a super-fight," the Welshman told BBC TV. "Call me a legend killer. I've taken care of a so-called legend in Hopkins and hopefully Roy Jones as well." Calzaghe's options appear to be to stick at light-heavyweight to fight Jones or Antonio Tarver or drop back to the lower division to meet unbeaten American Kelly Pavlik, who usually fights at middleweight. "All that's left is one more fight and that could be either Roy Jones or Kelly Pavlik," Calzaghe told BBC radio. "Roy Jones is making himself seen and heard. I've spoken to him, he's totally different to Bernard Hopkins. He is a nice guy, full of respect and that will be a massive fight and what a way to finish off your career against the former middleweight, super-middleweight, light-heavy and heavyweight champion of the world. That would be an amazing way to finish off." Jones was at ringside for the Calzaghe-Hopkins fight and said he was interested in facing the Welshman. But he wants two fights, one in Britain -- probably before 60,000 fans at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium -- and one in the United States. "That's all I want to do next, nothing else but that," Jones said. "Joe's saying that this is going to be his last year so maybe we should make it quicker than November. But both the countries want to show the fight so I think we should agree to two fights, one over in his country and one in mine." Meanwhile, Antonio Tarver, who beat Clinton Woods on April 13 to regain the IBF light-heavyweight title, said he would also like to fight Calzaghe. "Everyone was mentioned as Calzaghe's potential next opponent but me, the true light-heavyweight world champion," Tarver said. "I am the real legend killer. I beat Roy Jones not once but twice. I have also beaten Glen Johnson, Clinton Woods and many more top fighters in the light-heavyweight division. "I am the only light-heavyweight champion who currently holds two belts and on my way to unifying the belts this year. I will fight Calzaghe in the U.S., in the U.K. or wherever he wants to fight." |
