TAIPEI, Taiwan -- High ranking government officials, including Premier Chang Chun-hsiung, will go vegetarian Tuesday to mark Earth Day, Executive Yuan spokesman Shieh Jhy-wey said yesterday.

Apart from Chang, Vice Premier Chiou I-jen and Executive Yuan Secretary-General Chen Chin-jun will also forego meat to lend their support to mark Earth Day, said Shieh.

The Executive Yuan issued notification to the agencies under its auspices, urging their staff to either walk, cycle or take public transport to work on the day.

The Executive Yuan also called on its agencies to switch off lights and turn off elevators for one hour during the midday break as part of their efforts to reduce CO2 emissions in observing the day.

According to Shieh, Environmental Protection Administration Minister Chen Chung-hsing, Fair Trade Commission Chairman Tang Jinn-chuan and he himself will walk to their offices Tuesday morning.

Only one car will escort the premier to his office, rather than the usual three, he added.
