NT$1 mil. donation to help aboriginal Little Leaguers TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Hua Nan Financial Holdings Co. has donated NT$1 million Friday to help schoolchildren from Taiwan's indigenous tribes develop their baseball talent. Liu Mao-hsien, vice president of Hua Nan Financial, presented the donation to Huang Wen-chung, chairman of the Chinese Taipei Baseball Association. Executives of Hua Nan Financial noted that over half of Taiwan's baseball players are from indigenous tribes, even though many grow up in poor families and attend schools where resources are insufficient. A team of the native Taiwanese won the first Little League World Series championships for the nation and retained the world title for several years in the 1960s. Prior to the 2008 Final Olympic Baseball Qualifying Tournament, held in central Taiwan from March 7-14, Hun Nan pledged to Nat,000 (US$324) for each run Taiwan scored and Nat,000 for each home run the national team hit in the qualifying series. In the seven round-robin matches it played, Taiwan scored 35 runs and banged four home runs, earning Nat,000 for young indigenous players. Hun Nan Financial decided, however, to increase the donation to Nat million. Taiwan, Canada, and South Korea earned them the right to compete in the Being Olympics. Hun Nan Financial is a listed company on the Taiwan Stock Exchange. It has eight subsidiaries, including Hun Nan Commercial Bank, and boasts assets of Nat,675 billion and equity capital of Nat.7 billion. The group, with more than 280 domestic and nine overseas outlets, has over 9,600 employees. |
