HANOI, Vietnam -- Vietnamese authorities seized about 15 metric tons of pangolin carcasses headed for restaurants in China, a customs official said Friday. The scaly anteaters, considered delicacies in China and Vietnam, are protected under an international convention to conserve endangered species. The transporting and trading of the animals are strictly prohibited.

Anteater carcasses found in two containers Thursday at Vietnam's northern port of Hai Phong were in transit from Indonesia to China, said Vu Hoang Duong, the city's chief customs inspector. "This is the biggest shipment of wild animals we have discovered so far," Duong said.
