TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Wasps or hornets are so rare in urbanized Taiwan that firemen had to be fetched to remove a nest of stinging insects in a downtown Taichung primary school yesterday.

The schoolchildren didn't know there was a hornet's net in a schoolground tree.

A game of baseball was being played at Chunghua (China) Elementary School in the morning, and a slugger hit a home run. The ball flew far past the centerfielder and hit a banyan tree.

Every boy on the winning side was happy -- for only a couple of minutes, because the ball hit the nest in the tree. Angry hornets attacked the boys, stinging six of them. They all panicked. The game was called off, and firemen were called for help.

The wounded were taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors described their condition as "nothing serious." A few stings didn't justify hospitalization.

Firemen, however, had to remove the nest in the evening.
