HONIARA -- The Solomon Islands prime minister will boycott a summit of Pacific leaders next week because of a dispute over an Australian-led assistance mission in his country, officials said Tuesday. As part of a long-running battle with Canberra, Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare has been trying to dilute Australia's influence in the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI).

But the Pacific Islands Forum, a regional grouping, has come out in support of RAMSI, leading to Sogavare's decision to stay away, Sogavare's secretary Rence Sore said. "It is a cabinet decision that the Solomon Islands will not attend the forum this year," Sore said.
