Vietnam's precious stone paintings A long time ago, precious stones were considered the quintessential treasures of Heaven, and only kings and rich aristocrats owned them or those who were very lucky might hope to receive such precious gifts. Vietnam is endowed by nature with precious stones such as rubies, sapphires, spinels, with great potential in both quality and quantity, scattered throughout the whole country. Taking full advantage of the precious stone resources, the Than Chau Company is in the vanguard for using them to create valuable artworks. With the natural hues of stones and skillfulness of craftsmen, precious stones are precisely and meticulously grafted to become lively works that accentuate the beauty of life. Works include Vietnamese folk paintings of Dong Ho, Hang Trong and tu bunh (a set of four paintings of the four seasons or four girls playing traditional musical instruments), and works of famous painters Picasso, Van Gogh and Leonardo De Vinci. Grafting a painting with precious stones is a complicated job because it must be done through several stages. In order to get a gram of stones, workers in remote mountainous areas have to work hard and sort them out carefully, and it might take them several months to get one tael of precious stones. On average, a painting needs between 0.3 and 5 kg of previous stones, and delicate details on the painting require the craftsmen to have both skill and aesthetic taste. Using their talent, the craftsmen help develop a fine handicraft and create new products that have both economic and artistic values. |
