Taiwan donates 500 police motorcycles to El Salvador President Chen Shui-bian donated 500 motorcycles to El Salvador on behalf of Taiwan Saturday to help improve social order in the Central American ally. Chen handed a symbolic key to El Salvador's police chief, Rodrigo Avila Avilez, at a ceremony to mark the donation, worth US$1.5 million. Addressing the ceremony, Chen said Taiwan made the offer in an effort to raise the Salvadoran police force's maneuverability and operational efficiency. It is hoped that the donation will help facilitate President Antonio Saca's efforts to improve social order and police efficiency in El Salvador, Chen added. He noted that the motorcycles would go into use immediately. Later in the day, Chen, who arrived in San Salvador Friday for a three-day state visit, traveled to Panchimalco City accompanied by Casa to visit renowned Salvadoran painter Miguel Angel Ramirez. El Salvador is the second leg of Chen's three-nation Central American visit. The presidential delegation was in Honduras Aug. 21-24 to attend a Taiwan-Central America leadership summit. Chen is scheduled to travel on to Nicaragua Aug. 26. He is set to wrap up his Central American visit Aug. 28 and head home via Alaska, arriving in Taipei Aug. 29. |
