Hsinchu Science Park records 6.49 percent export growth

Exports from the Hsinchu Science Park in northern Taiwan totalled NT$291.2 billion (US$8.85 billion) during the first six months of this year, marking a year-on-year growth of 6.49 percent, according to statistics released Saturday by the science park administration.

The opto-electronics sector performed the best in terms of exports during the six-month period, compared with the other six major industries in the park, with exports reaching NT$94.68 billion, or 80.05 percent year-on-year growth, according to the tallies.

It was the only sector in the park which registered a growth in export during the period.

Exports of the integrated circuit sector amounted to NT$152.47 billion in the first half, a drop of 9.94 percent from the same period of 2006, while the computer and peripheral device sector exported products valued at NT$30.68 billion, posing a year-on-year drop of 12.34 percent.

Exports of the communications sector reached NT$11.4 billion, registering an 18.74 percent decline.

The precision machinery sector exported goods valued at NT$1.72 billion between January and June, marking a 1.14 percent drop, while the biotech industry exported products worth NT$223 million, marking a 70.66 percent drop -- the largest fall among all the sectors.
