Machinery output to hit NT$1 trillion by '09 The machinery sector is expected to become the third manufacturing industry in Taiwan to generate an annual production value of at least NT$1 trillion, following the semiconductor and flat-screen monitor production sectors, Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) officials said yesterday. The MOEA plans to assist 10 local enterprises in the sector in efforts to develop them into flagship enterprises whose turnover reaches NT$10 billion or more per year, the officials said. According to MOEA statistics, the machinery sector generated output valued at NT$800 billion in 2006, representing an increase of 10.8 percent over the previous year. The output accounted for 6.5 percent of the accumulated production value of all the domestic manufacturing sectors in 2006, but the carbon dioxide emission amount accounted only for 0.7 percent of the total. The figures suggest that the government should make efforts to help the energy-saving sector's development, the officials said, noting that the efforts should include the establishment of more conglomerates of precision machinery related manufacturers following one set up in the Central Taiwan Science Park in Taichung County. |
