Catchings and Fever snap Shock’s streak Tamika Catchings had 26 points and 14 rebounds and Tammy Sutton-Brown added 17 points as the Indiana Fever ended the Detroit Shock’s perfect start with a 77-67 win Saturday. The loss dropped the Shock to 7-1 and prevented them from tying the Los Angeles Sparks’ league record of nine straight wins to start a season. Catchings was 5-of-10 from the floor, and hit 14 of her season-high 16 free-throw attempts for Indiana (9-2). Deanna Nolan and Katie Feenstra had 14 points each for Detroit, which was missing Cheryl Ford (knee) and didn’t get a single first-half point from either Katie Smith or Kara Braxton due to foul trouble. Lynx 83, Sparks 58 At Minneapolis, Kristen Mann scored 16 points and matched a career-best with four 3-pointers, and Minnesota won consecutive games for the first time this season. Minnesota, which started 1-9, snapped the Sparks’ three-game winning streak. LaToya Thomas led the Sparks with 13 points. Seimone Augustus finished with 12 points, and hit a jumper in the paint with four minutes left in the second quarter, putting her over 1,000 points for her career. In her 46th pro game, Augustus becomes the second-fastest player in WNBA history to reach 1,000. Houston’s Cynthia Cooper did it in 45 games. Silver Stars 79, Liberty 71 At San Antonio, Becky Hammon scored 22 points and had seven assists in her first game against her former team. Hammon was traded in the offseason after eight years and three All-Star appearances in New York. She’s having a career season in San Antonio. She’s the fifth-leading scorer in the WNBA and leads in assists. Sophia Young added 21 points for the Silver Stars (5-4) and Erin Buescher had 16. She was traded by the Liberty on draft day for Ohio State center Jessica Davenport, the No. 2 overall draft pick by San Antonio. Davenport had eight points and five rebounds for New York (6-4), which has lost four of five games. Monarchs 75, Comets 63 At Sacramento, California, Chelsea Newton scored a career-high 17 points and the Monarchs pulled away in the second half against winless Houston. The Comets have opened the season with 10 straight losses, eight by 10 or more points. Houston had never had more than a four-game losing streak in the franchise’s previous 10 seasons, all under coach Van Chancellor, who retired after the 2006 season. Yolanda Griffith, who is playing with a sore thumb in the early season, scored 10 of her 13 points in the second half. Rebekkah Brunson had 12 points and Sholanda Robinson added 10. Tina Thompson, who scored 33 points in last Monday’s 15-point loss to Sacramento, was doubled teamed throughout the game and had most of her 24 points in the game’s final five minutes. |
